The Institution Of School
Here are some manifest and latent functions of school.
-An obvious manifest function of school is being required to attend classes and completing the work.
-Another obvious manifest function is being expected to respect teachers, staff, and other students.
-Bullying in school is a manifest function that creates conflict within the institution-A latent function of school is people abusing drugs or alcohol on school campus.
-Another latent function of school that can create conflict is students struggling academically or with problems outside of school.
-Another manifest function of school is excessive stress and lack of sleep due to getting assigned homework even after 7 hours of school.
I tend to see a lot of US schools as dysfunctional and somewhat problematic with education styles and problematic punishments. I see animas as creating balance and I don’t see the same problems and conflicts here as I did at other public schools I have attended. I believe Animas has changed my view of school from problematic and being a conflict theorist to functionalism. I value education and feel that its an important part of our society to be well educated and without it our society would suffer a huge loss in new developments and technology.
In this institution the norms are very well explained and while giving you a lot of freedoms you are expected to follow the rules. Attendance is necessary and required. If you don’t show up to your classes your education will suffer and your grades will reflect that.
I believe that schools give a lot to society because without education there can be no progress. If we are all well educated on problems in our society then we can work together as one to find solutions. Without education our technology would stop evolving and advancing and we would be at a standstill.

Schools contribute and detract from our society in many interesting ways. From an early age we are told “School is necessary to be successful,” and we are pressured to stay in school and further our education. The primary function of school is to educate children for the well being of our society. Another obvious function of going to school from an early age is socialization of children giving them the skills necessary to interact with other children and adults. Every school has cultural norms that the students are taught to adhere for example, walking in lines, completing work, and respecting others. There are Sanctions for following or breaking these norms, if you don’t adhere to the rules you are bad or need to be punished. While if you follow the rules and norms you may be rewarded. A less obvious function of schools is teaching children gender roles. “Children internalize gender stereotypes and prejudices, which in turn guide their own preferences and behaviours.” In other words the gender roles that children are exposed to at school from there teachers and peers has a deep impact on the way they act.
How schools create balance in society From a functionalist point of view public schools create balance by providing education to all children. People who are educated tend to be healthier and lead more fulfilling lives. Better education leads to higher paying jobs and better financial stability. Therefore if everyone is provided access to education then our society as a whole becomes healthier and stronger. “Education is good not just for the person who becomes educated, but also for everyone around her. When citizens are more productive, they are able to contribute to the economy in ways that benefit others far beyond the salaries that they receive. They also become much less likely to need public assistance (when the economy is not in a slump), to commit criminal acts, and so on.” wrote NEIL H. BUCHANAN.
Institutional Norms, Values, and Sanctions The institutional norms of most schools include, attending classes. being on time, being polite to teachers and peers, LEARNING, and completing assignments. These norms help support the values that underlie most educational institutions in our country. Those values include, “ tuition-free education for all students, the promise of equal educational opportunities no matter race, religion or ability, a commitment to high standards and high expectations for all students, a system of governance that ensures public accountability, a benefit to society by teaching democratic principles and common values.” reported a recent article on www.centerforpubliceducation.org.
The positive and negative sanctions vary from district to district, school to school and state to state depending on laws and administration norms and values.
For example, Att Aanimas I know a former student who was expelled for ssmoking on campus while at DHS know multiple students who have been caughht smoking on campus and were only suspended.
Conclusion: In conclusion I think that school contributes positively to society. In school we learn both social skills and become more educated. It is important to be well educated because it can help with getting jobs and deciding what profession we want to go into. School is an important part of our society

SMART GOAL
My goal is to get better grades and produce more quality work by being more engaged. When I feel unengaged or don't find any personal value or interest in the work we are doing, I will take initiative and talk to the teacher about possibly modifying the assignment to fit my needs. This goal will keep me more engaged in my school work and help me enjoy going to school much more. But when I don't necessarily like the project we are doing I will do my best to put in 100% effort and still do a good job. I will check in with my teachers at the beginning of each project when needed to make sure I meet this goal. I will then meet with my advisor and tell him how it is going once a month. Achieving this goal will allow me to take my education into my own hands and it will make me love school even more.
REFLECTIVE QUESTION
This year I grew as a learner and a person. Before this year I hated going to school, was unmotivated and didn’t care about my grades. At mountain the teachers thought of me as a trouble student. Although almost all my closest friends went there the teachers made me feel like I didn’t belong. It was clear the administration didn’t want me there and at every chance they could they would suspend me. Animas is completely different, in that the student teacher relationships consist of mutual respect and the school is motivated to keep the students who attend happy. This year I feel like I have grown as a person I have become more mature and more educationally motivated. My evidence is displayed in my final grades. I worked hard to get my grades to mostly A’s and a single B. I think that I am still growing as a learner and animas is a good place for that to take place. I appreciate being here and I am excited for next semester.
